抄録 Recently, J.Korczak is being recognized as one of the persons who are in the ideological background of the establishment of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in Japan. Korczak wrote a lot of work as a writer and as an educator. Among his works written for children, there are educational values for adults and teachers. The aim of this paper is to consider the pedagogical value of Korczak’s writing “When I am little again” by using the idea of M.Buber’s “Umfassung (Embracing)” as a key concept. In this work, Korczak tells the story of one teacher who returns to the childhood again and who has not forgotten his life experience as an adult. Korczak presents the world of children through the eyes of a child and through the eyes of adult. In this work there are two features. The first one is that the hero has a double perspective: the eyes of a child and an adult. Second is, in the story sometimes the hero temporarily suspend the story and speaks to the audience (the reader) “you”. This “you” is sometimes a child and sometimes adult. This narrative includes a pedagogical meanings, it is one of the factors that this writings is regarded as pedagogical book. The “Umfassung” is that in the relation of two personalities (teacher and pupil), ‘this one person (teacher), without forfeiting anything of the felt reality of his activity, at the same time lives through the common event from the standpoint of the other’(M.Buber). And the most important thing in “Umfassung” is not to understand children, but to question the teacher’s own act and to continue to question what she/he should do as a teacher. In Korczak’s story, when his hero encounters an event as a child, he reflects on his behavior as an adult. Therefore this book provides the simulated experience of “Umfassung” for readers and encourages teacher to have a rethink about his/her act to children.
